{"id":31667,"date":"2026-09-21T13:55:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T20:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/?p=31667"},"modified":"2026-09-21T13:55:48","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T20:55:48","slug":"know-your-pests-japanese-beetle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/index.php\/2026\/09\/21\/know-your-pests-japanese-beetle\/","title":{"rendered":"Know Your Pests: Japanese Beetle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-to-luminous-vivid-orange-gradient-background has-background has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Japanese Beetle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">As part of our \u201cKnow Your Pests\u201d series leading up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iscc.ca.gov\/\">California\u2019s Invasive Species Council summit on October 1-2 in Sacramento<\/a>, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is highlighting invasive pests that Californians should know how to identify and what to do if they see or suspect one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-background has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing what to look for and reporting a suspected pest can help protect California agriculture, our communities and our natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Know it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Japanese beetle (<em>Popillia japonica<\/em>) is an invasive insect that can feed on hundreds of species of plants. Adult beetles feed on plant leaves, flowers and fruit, while the larvae, or grubs, feed on plant roots in the soil. Japanese beetles can damage fruit trees, vineyards, berry crops, ornamental plants and turf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-8.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"779\" height=\"260\" src=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-8.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31668\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.9951923076923075;width:623px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-8.jpeg 779w, https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-8-300x100.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-8-767x256.jpeg 767w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 779px) 100vw, 779px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Spot it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adult Japanese beetles are about 3\/8 inch long and have a distinctive metallic green body with copper-brown wing covers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look for adults feeding on leaves, flowers and fruit, particularly during the summer months. Feeding can cause a characteristic skeletonized appearance to leaves, with the tissue between the leaf veins eaten away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japanese beetle grubs live underground and feed on the roots of grasses and other plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-9.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"416\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31669\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.332;width:333px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-9.jpeg 416w, https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-9-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why it matters?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">California works to keep Japanese beetle from becoming established because of the significant threat it poses to agriculture and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beetle feeds on a wide range of crops and plants, including grapes, berries, tree fruit, nursery plants and ornamental vegetation.
