From peppers and tomatoes to strawberries, potatoes, garlic, onions and more, Gerardo and his family grow a diverse array of crops while building a direct connection between the farm and the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Gerardo, that connection is at the heart of what he does: helping people have access to food that is fresh, healthy and grown close to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We caught up with Gerardo and his wife, Vicky\u2014at the <a href=\"https:\/\/visit-eldorado.com\/activity\/cameron-park-certified-farmers-market\/\">Cameron Park Certified Farmers\u2019 Market<\/a>, where you can find them each Friday morning from 8 am \u2013 12 pm \u2013 located at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cameronpark.org\/\">Cameron Park Community Services District<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tell us about yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hi, I\u2019m Gerardo P\u00e9rez from P\u00e9rez Farms. We\u2019re here at the Cameron Park Farmers\u2019 Market at the Cameron Park Community Center. We\u2019ve brought produce here to sell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What kinds of products do you bring to the farmers\u2019 market?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We bring different varieties of produce. We also bring some sweet peppers, cherry tomatoes, and we grow strawberries as well. Here we have chicken eggs, what we call <em>blanquillos<\/em>, as well as poblano peppers. We have hot peppers, potatoes, garlic, and plenty of onions. And a few flowers here and there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How long have you been selling at farmers\u2019 markets and working on your own farm?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been doing farmers\u2019 markets for 32 years, and I\u2019ve been working for myself since 2010, working full-time for our business, P\u00e9rez Farms, which is my own family business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why is it important to you to bring your products directly to farmers\u2019 markets?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do this, so people can come and have the opportunity to get everything fresh at these markets. All of this was picked just a day before, compared with stores where produce can spend weeks in warehouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is the importance of connecting directly with your customers?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So everything here is fresh. And that\u2019s the importance of connecting directly with the public\u2014from the farmer to the customer. There are no middlemen between us, nobody buying and reselling everything. We\u2019re (Certified Farmers Markets) selling directly to the public.
