{"id":10029,"date":"2015-12-30T15:14:18","date_gmt":"2015-12-30T22:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/?p=10029"},"modified":"2015-12-30T15:14:18","modified_gmt":"2015-12-30T22:14:18","slug":"snowpacks-water-content-far-greater-than-one-year-ago-but-its-still-too-soon-to-know-whether-drought-will-be-broken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/index.php\/2015\/12\/30\/snowpacks-water-content-far-greater-than-one-year-ago-but-its-still-too-soon-to-know-whether-drought-will-be-broken\/","title":{"rendered":"Snowpack\u2019s Water Content Far Greater than One Year Ago, But It&#8217;s Still Too Soon to Know Whether Drought Will Be Broken"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>From the California Department of Water Resources<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted the winter\u2019s first media-oriented manual snow survey today, and despite the higher-than-average water content for the statewide snowpack, officials said snowfall during the remainder of the winter will largely determine whether California\u2019s drought will be entrenched for a fifth year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.water.ca.gov\/news\/newsreleases\/2015\/123015.pdf\">Full Department of Water Resources New Release<\/a><\/p>\n<p>DWR Director Mark Cowin said the heavy snowfall so far during Water Year 2016 \u201chas been a reasonable start, but another three or four months of surveys will indicate whether the snowpack\u2019s runoff will be sufficient to replenish California\u2019s reservoirs by this summer.\u201d Each water year begins on October 1 and ends on the following September 30.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Gehrke, chief of the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program, said more than four years of drought have left a water deficit around the state that may be difficult to overcome in just one winter season. \u201cClearly, this is much better that it was last year at this time, but we haven\u2019t had the full effect of the El Ni\u00f1o yet,\u201d Gehrke said. \u201cIf we believe the forecasts, then El Ni\u00f1o is supposed to kick in as we move through the rest of the winter. That will be critical when it comes to looking at reservoir storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.water.ca.gov\/spotlight\/slider\/images\/2015\/123015-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Today\u2019s manual reading by Surveys chief Frank Gehrke (in red coat) found 16.3 inches of snow water equivalent, 136 percent of average for this date. Statewide, electronic readings found the water content at 105 percent of average \u2013 about twice as much as last
