Local musician Brian Guido and Nick Miller, Managing Editor for Sacramento News & Review, have joined forces with five local restaurants to put together the first Sacramento Bacon Fest, held from Jan. 20 – 22.<\/p>\n

Guido said he got inspiration from reading about similar events in Des Moines and Chicago and decided that Sacramento needed something where local chefs can get together and showcase their talent to the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the place I call home,\u201d Guido, who moved to Sacramento in 1992, said. \u201cI felt that this city was just as good of a place to have an event like this, given the talented chefs that we have here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guido said that he approached Miller, who he has known for eight years, with the idea while at a show at Beatnik Studios.<\/p>\n

Together, they worked with Luigi\u2019s Slice Fungarden, Magpie Market Caf\u00e9, Pangaea Two Brews Caf\u00e9, The Golden Bear and Mulvaney\u2019s Building and Loan to host bacon-inspired events at each location.<\/p>\n

Guido said it was easy to choose the venues, as he is a fan of every location that is participating.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe focus is on the craftsmanship of making quality-made bacon,\u201d Guido said, \u201cand our talented food community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jan. 20<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Luigi\u2019s will be serving a special Bacon Supreme Pizza and will host live music from local bands Jem and Scout<\/a>, Aaron King, The Foxtails<\/a>, John Conley<\/a>, 50-Watt Heavy<\/a> \u2013 the band Guido is currently in – and others, who will be performing songs from Kevin Bacon movies.<\/p>\n

Jan. 21<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Breakfast\/Brunch at Magpie Caterers Market and Cafe<\/strong>

Magpie will be going off the beaten path with its menu for the Bacon Fest as the cafe and catering company usually serves baked goods that can be eaten on the go.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to take advantage of the morning to do breakfast\/brunch,\u201d said co-owner Ed Roehr. \u201cThe whole menu will be different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roehr added that he is seeing this as a day to celebrate a change in Magpie\u2019s daily menu.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just looking forward to giving it a shot,\u201d Roehr said.<\/p>\n

Guest chef Jason Azevedo will be at Pangaea Two Brews Cafe to cook a special four-item menu, and each item will be paired with a beer.<\/p>\n

The cafe will also serve beer with bacon in the glass.<\/p>\n

Although the Bacon Fest menu is still in development, The Golden Bear’s co-owner Kimio Bazett said it will have a lot of bacon in it, including the cocktails.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking to be innovative and exciting with the bacon,\u201d Bazett said, \u201csomething that hasn\u2019t been seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that there will be at least one, if not two, cocktails with bacon in them. There will also be food and drink specials for the bacon lovers.<\/p>\n

Jan. 22<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Local celebrities will judge bacon-inspired meals created by local chefs. The chefs must enter the contest beforehand, and then a panel chooses who gets to compete at the event.<\/p>\n

Guido said this was the first event he planned of this caliber and that he hopes to expand next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it will be a good boost for the restaurant\/bar community during a traditionally slow period,\u201d he added, \u201cand to show people what good quality products taste like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller said he sees this event as a break from the ever-looming New Year\u2019s resolutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the holidays, people always resolve to lose weight and eat healthy and the like,\u201d Miller said. \u201cI say screw that: Float a piece of bacon in your beer, relax for the weekend and enjoy some fine swine.\u201d<\/p>\n
