Wooden High School is small. It\u00a0doesn\u2019t have a football field or a swimming pool or a gym. But it has\u00a0a farm.\u00a0And the farm has become\u00a0a central part of Alex\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my job to go around&#8230;every morning and feed the animals,\u201d Alex recently told students visiting the grounds\u00a0during his first-period animal behavior class\u00a0as he\u00a0took them by\u00a0a pair of tussling goats, past the shed filled with hay\u00a0for the two alpacas, toward the pigs who were lying by the small pond.<\/p>\n<p>Alex, who lives in a foster care\u00a0group home,\u00a0used to\u00a0run away\u00a0for days at a time to visit his girlfriend. He\u2019d ditch school\u00a0at\u00a0Grover Cleveland Charter High\u00a0in Reseda\u00a0and go to the library instead.<\/p>\n<p>Since transferring to Wooden this year, he\u2019s been at school most mornings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good for me,\u201d Alex said.\u00a0\u201cIf this is my first period, it kind of makes me want to come to school every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wooden\u00a0is a continuation school,\u00a0mostly\u00a0for students who are\u00a0behind in credits and at risk of not graduating.\u00a0As schools in\u00a0L.A. Unified\u00a0increasingly\u00a0turn to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/education\/la-me-edu-king-lausd-graduation-rate-20160809-snap-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">online credit recovery<\/a>classes to allow more students to graduate on time, the staff at Wooden\u00a0uses the farm for hands-on, face-to-face\u00a0learning.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of chemistry and biology, students can take environmental studies or\u00a0plant and soil science,\u00a0in which\u00a0they develop a plan for a drought-resistant garden.<\/p>\n<p>Wooden\u2019s operating philosophy\u00a0\u2014\u00a0that students can thrive if they get personalized attention and learn concepts through doing \u2014 is one that state\u00a0education officials increasingly are espousing.<\/p>\n<p>California is among a number of states that recently adopted\u00a0Next Generation Science Standards,\u00a0which focus\u00a0on\u00a0forging connections between classes and\u00a0integrating\u00a0scientific investigation into\u00a0lessons, instead of just\u00a0having students memorize\u00a0concepts.<\/p>\n<p>Along those lines, science teacher Stephanie Darling\u2019s\u00a0first-period\u00a0class\u00a0doesn\u2019t take place in a classroom with her standing in front of a\u00a0whiteboard. Usually, she does not even lead lessons. Students learn them by her side at the farm.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0one September\u00a0morning, some of her\u00a0students\u00a0were tending to the animals \u2014 feeding the chickens, cleaning water bowls \u2014 while others were watering plants or working\u00a0in the organic\u00a0garden.<\/p>\n<p>All of the animals were rescued. A few years ago, with the help of the nonprofit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kindredspiritscarefarm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kindred Spirits Care Farm<\/a>, the school planted\u00a0the\u00a0garden. Now tomato plants wind around arches, offering shade to the basil plants below.<\/p>\n<p>Bryant Santoyo\u2019s first-period\u00a0task\u00a0was to shovel mulch\u00a0into the garden.<\/p>\n<p>At first, he couldn\u2019t explain why he was shoveling.<\/p>\n<p>But Darling pushed him, asking: What is this for?<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re going to grow\u00a0blueberry plants, he\u00a0told\u00a0her.<\/p>\n<p>What will the mulch\u00a0do?<\/p>\n<p>Cover the ground to keep it cool and act as fertilizer,\u00a0he\u00a0answered, correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Bryant, 17, enrolled at Wooden after dropping out of a few other schools. To keep his job at Ralphs, he needed to prove he was in school.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s liking school now, he said, and\u00a0the way Wooden\u00a0 gets\u00a0him to learn new things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see the process of something growing,\u201d Bryant\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>One goal of the new science standards is to attract students in populations\u00a0underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math careers, and prepare them\u00a0for those fields, said Derrick Chau, senior executive director for instruction at L.A. Unified.<\/p>\n<p>Estephanie Aparicio, 16, wants to be a veterinarian. She fell behind at her former school,\u00a0Reseda High, after she was bullied and suffered from panic attacks and\u00a0depression.<\/p>\n<p>At Wooden, she\u2019s not only learned\u00a0the basics of caring for animals,\u00a0but has found that spending time with them has\u00a0been therapeutic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy anxiety has basically gone away,\u201d she said. Her favorite\u00a0animal is Evan, a white\u00a0alpaca.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 22 the school will invite the public to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/achieve.lausd.net\/site\/default.aspx?PageType=3&amp;DomainID=576&amp;ModuleInstanceID=25860&amp;ViewID=047E6BE3-6D87-4130-8424-D8E4E9ED6C2A&amp;RenderLoc=0&amp;FlexDataID=40430&amp;PageID=8478\" target=\"_blank\">Food Day LA<\/a>\u00a0to learn about the farm, garden and how to bring urban agriculture to their backyards.<\/p>\n<p>One concern about continuation schools\u00a0is whether\u00a0they\u2019re rigorous enough to prepare students for college.<\/p>\n<p>Darling is Wooden\u2019s only\u00a0science teacher. She teaches animal behavior, plant and soil science and\u00a0environmental studies. Animal behavior is an elective, but\u00a0students who enroll in the other classes\u00a0use those as science requirements for\u00a0Cal State\u00a0University admission, Darling said. As for the University of California, only plant and soil science\u00a0counts toward science\u00a0entrance\u00a0requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Students\u00a0interested in attending UC\u00a0schools\u00a0can take extra science classes after school\u00a0or complete different assignments in one of Darling\u2019s\u00a0existing classes.<\/p>\n<p>Alex\u00a0takes an integrated-coordinated science class\u00a0with students in\u00a0Darling\u2019s\u00a0environmental studies\u00a0class to get credit for the specialized instruction\u00a0if he applies to UC.<\/p>\n<p>His hope is to\u00a0graduate in 2017, attend a community college for two years\u00a0and transfer to a four-year school\u00a0to become a nurse.<\/p>\n<p>He hasn\u2019t ditched school in weeks and doesn\u2019t plan to, he said\u00a0while petting Peanut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s peaceful, and I like\u00a0the animals,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said. \u201cThey\u2019re better company than people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/education\/la-me-edu-school-animal-refuge-20160919-snap-story.html\">Link to story<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sonali Kohli Most school\u00a0days 17-year-old Alex Snyder eats lunch with a pot-bellied\u00a0pig named Peanut.
