A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details?pubid=81401\">new report <\/a>by the USDA\u2019s Economic Research Service (ERS) shows not only just how dependent America is on family farms, but also how many are independent of government.<\/p>\n<p>While farms are often depicted as benefiting from \u201ccorporate welfare\u201d as they pursue \u201cfactory farming\u201d practices, USDA\u2019s \u201cAmerica\u2019s Diverse Family Farms: 2016 Edition\u201d tells a different story. Among facts reported are these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Family farms of various types account for 99 percent of all farms, and those farms account for 89 percent of all production as of 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Small farms account for a large share of the production of poultry and eggs, along with 52 percent of the hay production.<\/li>\n<li>Seventy-two percent of all farms received no farm-related government payments in 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-135523\" src=\"http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/files\/2016\/12\/graphs-2016-USDA-Family-Farm-report.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 406px) 100vw, 406px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/files\/2016\/12\/graphs-2016-USDA-Family-Farm-report.jpg 406w, http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/files\/2016\/12\/graphs-2016-USDA-Family-Farm-report-300x185.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/files\/2016\/12\/graphs-2016-USDA-Family-Farm-report-60x37.jpg 60w, http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/files\/2016\/12\/graphs-2016-USDA-Family-Farm-report-118x73.jpg 118w, http:\/\/www.foodsafetynews.com\/files\/2016\/12\/graphs-2016-USDA-Family-Farm-report-256x158.jpg 256w\" alt=\"To read the full report, click on the graphic. Courtesy of USDA\" width=\"406\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since 1991 the ERS researchers say farms producing $5 million or more have increased their share of production to 23 percent in 2015, up from 13 percent. The mid-range farms with $1 million to $4,999,999 in production increased to 29 percent, up from 19 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Dairy production and specialty crops dominated that production.<\/p>\n<p>Small farms are more likely to have\u00a0an operating profit margin.
