The company hopes to quickly scale up its technology and capture one percent of the global carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels by 2025, reports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/first-commercial-co2-capture-plant-live-21494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby\u00a0Magill\u00a0for\u00a0<em>Climate Central<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"associated-container\">The company estimates that the plant will remove some 900 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year\u2014a tiny fraction of the 10\u00a0gigtons\u00a0that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change determined must be\u00a0drawn down each year to halt global warming, writes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/59308-facility-captures-carbon-dioxide-from-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tereza\u00a0Pultarova\u00a0for\u00a0<em>Live Science<\/em><\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"associated-container\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Located near the Swiss village of\u00a0Hinwil\u00a0on the roof of a garbage incinerator, the direct air capture technology uses a proprietary filter to absorb atmospheric CO2 as it passes through the plant, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climeworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/01_PR-Climeworks-DAC-Plant-Opening.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>. Once the filter is saturated, it is heated to 100 degrees Celsius, causing it to release the gas. The CO2 is then redirected to a greenhouse where it will help grow vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers. The carbon boost could improve the lettuce harvest by up to 20\u00a0percent, according to the company&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climeworks.com\/our-customers\/greenhouses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve their goal of one percent, the company estimates they will need 250,000 plants the same size as the Hinwil unit, Magill reports.<\/p>\n<p>Though the plant doesn\u2019t result in net negative emissions, it is recycling the carbon dioxide for other uses, Magill writes. In order to actually achieve negative emissions the removed CO2 would have to be sequestered via capture in underground chambers or transformation into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2016\/06\/09\/scientists-in-iceland-have-a-solution-to-our-carbon-dioxide-problem-turn-it-into-stone\/?utm_term=.54eac2619de6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">substances like rock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, the technology could also be used to capture and sequester carbon dioxide. But for now, the plant is giving CO2 emissions a function, rather than simply letting them go in the atmosphere. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climeworks.com\/our-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">company also sees potential<\/a>\u00a0in selling the captured CO2 to the beverage industry to carbonize drinks or producing a renewable hydrocarbon fuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCO2 capture from air has been a very controversial topic in research for a long time,\u201d\u00a0Valentin\u00a0Gutknecht, a business development manager at Climeworks tells Pultarova. \u201cThere was a belief that the cost can\u2019t get down below $600 per ton of CO2 even at the mass scale. But we have managed to break this barrier.\u201d As Magill\u00a0reports, the company hopes to get the price down to about $400 per ton.<\/p>\n<p>But the technology is controversial for more than its cost. Last year, leading climate scientists, including Glen Peters,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/scientists-warn-negative-emissions-moral-hazard-20785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published a paper in the journal <em>Science<\/em><\/a> arguing that the nascent technology directs focus away from reducing overall emissions. And it could cause complacency in some global leaders who believe that a future technological breakthrough could readily solve the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0Climeworks\u00a0co-founder\u00a0Christoph\u00a0Gebald\u00a0has no scruples about his project, he tells\u00a0Magill.
