Southern Californians are being urged this summer to help fight a\u00a0disease that threatens<\/a>\u00a0to wipe out the state\u2019s iconic citrus by sharing fruit with friends, family and coworkers only after thoroughly washing it and removing the leaves.<\/p>\n

Agricultural officials also ask those who live within a\u00a0citrus greening disease quarantine zone<\/a>\u00a0in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside or San Bernardino counties not to\u00a0take fruit outside those areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The warning from the\u00a0state\u00a0Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program<\/a>\u00a0comes as the summer travel season heats up and the number of fruit trees infected with Huanglongbing \u2014 or\u00a0citrus greening disease<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 multiplies across Southern California.<\/p>\n

So far, the disease has afflicted residential neighborhoods only and three counties: Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside.<\/p>\n

But, as\u00a0of\u00a0June 2, the total number of diseased trees statewide had reached\u00a0602, up from\u00a0370 at the end of last year and\u00a023 at the end of 2016, said\u00a0Beth Grafton-Cardwell, a UC Riverside extension entomologist who conducts research in the Central Valley.<\/p>\n

Grafton-Cardwell said it is a matter of time before the disease reaches\u00a0commercial groves.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt could be as soon as this year,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cWe don\u2019t really know how devastating it is going to be, but it is going to be bad because we don\u2019t have a cure for the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s driving the call to take precautions is recent\u00a0devastation in Florida<\/a>, which saw its citrus production plummet.<\/p>\n

At stake is a $3.2 billion California industry that supports 22,000 jobs, the citrus program says.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The fear of widespread disaster is so great that officials recently\u00a0covered Riverside\u2019s parent navel orange<\/a>\u00a0tree and\u00a0UC Riverside researchers conducted a study<\/a>\u00a0to better understand how the disease attacks fruit-bearing trees.<\/p>\n

Citrus greening disease is spread by a tiny bug,\u00a0the aphid-like Asian citrus psyllid.\u00a0Infected trees have mottled leaves, and produce deformed fruit that\u00a0fail to ripen and stay green. And the fruit, though not harmful to people, isn\u2019t fit for eating, officials said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt tastes bitter, like medicine,\u201d said Ken Pellman, spokesman for the Los Angeles County agricultural commissioner.<\/p>\n

As for the psyllid, it is tiny, Orange County Agricultural Commissioner Jeff Croy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are about the size of an uncooked grain of rice,\u201d Croy said. \u201cMost people looking at the plant, because of their size, would never see them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruben Arroyo, Riverside County\u2019s agricultural commissioner, said the bug \u201chitchhikes on the leaves\u201d of citrus trees.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey actually prefer the new leaf growth,\u201d Croy said. \u201cThat is their favorite.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why officials want people to remove leaves and stems before moving oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits and tangerines.<\/p>\n

Pellman said the state\u2019s first infected tree was discovered in\u00a02012\u00a0in the front yard of a Hacienda Heights home. Then all was quiet until 2015, when the disease began to show up elsewhere, he said.<\/p>\n

It since has spread to San Gabriel, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Whittier, Cerritos and other cities, he said.<\/p>\n

To the south,\u00a0Orange County has\u00a0recorded more than 330 tree infections<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 the most of any county,\u00a0Croy said. Afflicted trees are in\u00a0Anaheim, Garden Grove,\u00a0Westminster, La Habra and\u00a0Yorba Linda.<\/p>\n

Arroyo said three infected trees were\u00a0discovered in a Riverside neighborhood,<\/a>not far from 15,800 acres of groves that annually produce $200 million worth of fruit.<\/p>\n

Quarantine zones totaling 729 square miles have been\u00a0drawn in wide circles<\/a>around each of those areas.<\/p>\n

While the campaign\u2019s primary focus is the industry, officials want to protect people\u2019s gardens, too. More than half of Southern California homes have citrus trees.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe love our citrus,\u201d Croy said. \u201cAnd it tears me apart when we have to take out someone\u2019s citrus tree from their yard.\u201d<\/p>\n

FIGHTING CITRUS GREENING<\/strong><\/p>\n

What to watch for:<\/strong>\u00a0The Asian citrus psyllid is\u00a0one-eighth of an inch long and feeds at a 45-degree angle, making it appear thorn-like on leaves and stems. Symptoms of citrus greening disease include blotchy, yellow leaves; deformed fruit that doesn\u2019t ripen; and excessive fruit drop.<\/p>\n

What to do if you spot the pest or disease:<\/strong>\u00a0Call the free California Department of Food and Agriculture Pest Hotline, 800-491-1899.<\/p>\n

How to prevent disease spread:<\/strong>\u00a0Share citrus fruit with friends and family only after thoroughly washing the fruit and removing the leaves.<\/p>\n
