Generations of farmers\u00a0have relied on knowledge and family expertise to grow food, but the sector\u00a0is set for a\u00a0surge of disruption at the hands of made\u2212in\u2212Canada\u00a0artificial intelligence\u2212powered systems.<\/p>\n

AI is now helping farmers\u00a0across the country to\u00a0increase yields, save costs and minimize environmental damage. Instead of spreading fertilizer across acres of fields or spraying entire orchards with herbicides,\u00a0they can now\u00a0target their efforts for maximum effect.<\/p>\n

SomaDetect Inc. of Fredericton is preparing to deliver commercial systems this fall that will test milk and use AI to provide insights to maximize a farmer\u2019s\u00a0profitability, dairy farmers monitor their herds through the \u201cinternet of cows.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sensors installed\u00a0at each milking stall identify each cow, test their milk and quickly provide farmers\u00a0metrics such as\u00a0protein and fat counts, indicators of disease, hormones that manage reproduction and antibiotic residuals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in a fourth revolution in agriculture and AI is absolutely critical,\u201d said co\u2212founder\u00a0Bethany Deshpande.<\/p>\n

However, Deshpande said the use of the technology is at an early stage where farmers are just starting to understand its power and the potential difference it can make on their operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of farmers have been demanding better technology, demanding better products for a long time and I think AI is huge part of how they\u2019re going to get that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Montreal\u2212based Motorleaf Inc. has developed a system that acquires data from indoor growing\u00a0operations and applies artificial intelligence and machine\u2212learning algorithms to\u00a0identify growing patterns in the greenhouse, which can then\u00a0be used to\u00a0predict the size of future harvests.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s like giving\u00a0farmers a virtual assistant, said co\u2212founder and CEO Alastair Monk, who formed the company two years ago with Ramen Dutta, an agricultural engineer.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of those ingredients are going to get mixed up into soup and out the other end comes an algorithm specifically for that greenhouse \u2026 so they can make smarter decisions instead of rolling the dice and risking what happens after they make those decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yield forecasts are crucial for growers because\u00a0they indicate how much produce will be available for pre\u2212sold contracts.<\/p>\n

Traditional counting methods can be off by 20 to 30 per cent because farmers estimate the yield for the entire crop after counting\u00a0samples of vegetables, leaves and flowers in a small area.<\/p>\n

SunSelect, a California greenhouse customer that cultivates tomatoes, is one\u00a0customer\u00a0that\u00a0abandoned manual predictions after Motorleaf\u2019s\u00a0algorithms doubled the accuracy of its weekly yield projection, resulting in significant savings for the grower, Motorleaf said.<\/p>\n

Systems\u00a0incorporating machine learning, a type of artificial intelligence,\u00a0are able to\u00a0make millions of calculations to detect patterns imperceptible by humans that are required for precision planting, autonomous vehicles and\u00a0robotics, says Graham Taylor, associate professor of engineering at the University of Guelph and faculty member at Toronto\u2019s Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence.<\/p>\n

AI researchers are largely\u00a0focused on applications for\u00a0deep\u2212pocketed businesses and tech firms, but its use in agriculture is\u00a0attracting global interest because of the pressing need to feed a growing global population amid increasing water shortages and a changing climate.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody\u2019s interested in AI right now and agriculture is a major concern for us as humanity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen faced with these sorts of really scary potential problems that\u2019s going to make (the adoption of AI in agriculture) move a little quicker,\u201d Taylor said in an interview.<\/p>\n

A combination of drones\u00a0and AI technology\u00a0have helped to alleviate stress on\u00a0California\u00a0pistachio and almond crops by watering only where it\u2019s needed, said David MacMillan, CEO\u00a0of Toronto\u2212based Deveron UAS, that is building one of North America\u2019s largest network of drones.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a place like California where your water costs are over $1,000 an acre, there\u2019s all these different value propositions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The technology can also be used in Ontario corn fields to target the use of fertilizers to areas that require extra help, saving farmers money.<\/p>\n

Canada is well\u2212positioned to be a leader in the field because it has disproportionate strength in artificial intelligence that is supported by government, Taylor believes.<\/p>\n

The federal government has earmarked $950 million in funding on technology \u201csuperclusters\u201d designed to encourage academia and businesses to work together on strategies to boost fast\u2212growing sectors.<\/p>\n

The five selected superclusters include\u00a0an agriculture group\u00a0based in the Prairies that will work to make the country a leading source of plant proteins.<\/p>\n

The technology\u00a0carries a potential downside, however: the systems could eventually replace farm\u00a0jobs such as manual picking and weeding, Taylor said.<\/p>\n

Robots can milk cows, pick apples and weed cabbage patches. Yet\u00a0farming jobs that require physical activity or the operation of machinery in unpredictable environments are moderately threatened by\u00a0automation,\u00a0according a McKinsey report.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings like weeding, those tasks might be replaced,\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I don\u2019t think you\u2019re going to see completely automated farm facilities in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n
