The Virulent Newcastle Disease (VND) project in Southern California is now in its fourth month. The disease has been detected at a total of 117 properties<\/a> in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Ventura Counties.<\/p>\n

Key numbers as of August 29, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

96,880<\/strong> <\/em>– Number of properties surveyed<\/p>\n

2,679<\/strong><\/em> – Number of properties placed under quarantine<\/p>\n

397<\/strong><\/em> – Number of properties released from quarantine<\/p>\n

671<\/strong><\/em> – Combined number of farmers markets, feed stores, pet stores, egg vendors and private veterinary practices visited by VND outreach teams<\/p>\n

Zero<\/strong><\/em> – Number of VND detections at commercial poultry operations<\/p>\n

40<\/strong><\/em> – Number of commercial operations in Southern California conducting surveillance testing<\/p>\n

176<\/strong><\/em> – Number of state and federal personnel working on this incident<\/p>\n

As this project continues, bird owners everywhere, but especially in Southern California, are urged to practice\u00a0strict biosecurity measures<\/a>. In Southern California these include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Don\u2019t move birds<\/li>\n
  2. Don\u2019t bring new birds to the property<\/li>\n
  3. Don\u2019t let people with birds come into contact with your birds.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    VND mostly travels through the movement of\u00a0 infected poultry or on the hands and feet of people that came into contact with infected poultry or their droppings.<\/p>\n

    Bird owners urged to\u00a0 report sick birds to CDFA\u2019s Sick Bird Hotline, 866-922-2473.<\/p>\n
