Both laboratories have confirmed that the index cow was positive for\u00a0 atypical (L-type) BSE.<\/p>\n<p>Both dairies that were previously held under\u00a0 quarantine during the investigation have been released from those quarantines,\u00a0 after inventories were completed and records were reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, investigation of the\u00a0 feed records at the index dairy premises has found no anomalies, and audits of\u00a0 all the feed suppliers to the index premises have shown them to be in\u00a0 compliance with the regulations.<\/p>\n<p>APHIS previously announced that it has\u00a0 identified two progeny of the positive cow. One progeny born to the positive\u00a0 cow in the last 2 years was stillborn; the second animal was appraised,\u00a0 humanely euthanized, and sampled for BSE at the National Veterinary Services\u00a0 Laboratories in Ames, Iowa. Test results for that animal were negative for\u00a0 BSE.<\/p>\n<p>Of several hundred potential birth cohort\u00a0 cattle, the focus of the tracing is on a small number (10-12) of cattle which\u00a0 may still be alive and have records that might allow them to be located. The\u00a0 remaining potential cohorts are no longer alive or have otherwise been ruled\u00a0 out.<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0 investigation moves toward completion, local officials from the California\u00a0 Department of Food and Agriculture and USDA APHIS Veterinary Services are now\u00a0 in charge of the incident command.<\/p>\n<p>The United States has a longstanding system of\u00a0 three interlocking safeguards against BSE that protects public and animal\u00a0 health in the United States, the most important of which is the removal of\u00a0 specified risk materials &#8211; or the parts of an animal that would contain BSE\u00a0 should an animal have the disease &#8211; from all animals presented for slaughter.\u00a0 The second safeguard is a strong feed ban that protects cattle from the\u00a0 disease. The third safeguard &#8211; which led to this detection &#8211; is our ongoing BSE\u00a0 surveillance program that allows USDA to detect the disease if it exists at\u00a0 very low levels in the U.S.
