{"id":17743,"date":"2019-04-29T16:44:53","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T23:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/?p=17743"},"modified":"2019-04-29T16:45:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T23:45:00","slug":"governor-newsom-directs-state-agencies-including-cdfa-to-prepare-water-resilience-portfolio-for-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/index.php\/2019\/04\/29\/governor-newsom-directs-state-agencies-including-cdfa-to-prepare-water-resilience-portfolio-for-california\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Newsom directs state agencies, including CDFA, to prepare water resilience portfolio for California"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As climate change continues to threaten the state\u2019s water\ninfrastructure and reliability, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed an executive\norder directing his administration to think differently and act boldly by\ndeveloping a comprehensive strategy to build a climate-resilient water system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order seeks to\nbroaden California\u2019s approach on water as the state faces a range of existing\nchallenges, including unsafe drinking water, major flood risks that threaten\npublic safety, severely depleted groundwater aquifers, agricultural communities\ncoping with uncertain water supplies and native fish populations threatened\nwith extinction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCalifornia\u2019s water challenges are daunting, from severely\ndepleted groundwater basins to vulnerable infrastructure to unsafe drinking\nwater in far too many communities. Climate change magnifies the risks,\u201d said\nGovernor Newsom. \u201cTo meet these challenges, we need to harness the best in\nscience, engineering and innovation to prepare for what\u2019s ahead and ensure\nlong-term water resilience and ecosystem health. We\u2019ll need an all-of-above\napproach to get there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order directs the secretaries of the California Natural\nResources Agency, California Environmental Protection Agency and the California\nDepartment of Food and Agriculture to identify and assess a suite of\ncomplementary actions to ensure safe and resilient water supplies, flood\nprotection and healthy waterways for the state\u2019s communities, economy and\nenvironment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order directs the state to think bigger and more strategically\non water by directing the agencies to inventory and assess current water\nsupplies and the health of waterways, future demands and challenges.
