USDA News Release<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Department of\nAgriculture (USDA) has approved a request from California to allow meal service\nduring school closures to minimize potential exposure to the coronavirus. These\nmeals are available at no cost to low-income children \u2013 and are not required to\nbe served in a group setting \u2013 to ensure kids receive nutritious meals while\nschools are temporarily closed.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUSDA stands with the\npeople of California as a part of a federal-wide coordinated response,\u201d said\nBrandon Lipps, Deputy Under Secretary for USDA\u2019s Food, Nutrition, and Consumer\nServices. \u201cThe flexibility provided by the waiver approved today will help\nensure that our children get wholesome meals, safeguarding their health during\ntimes of need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The waiver is effective immediately and will continue through June 30, 2020. USDA stands ready to provide additional assistance to the people of California and other areas impacted by the coronavirus as allowed by law and in coordination with the much larger government-wide response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All Food and Nutrition\nService programs \u2013 including the Supplemental Nutrition\nAssistance Program (SNAP)<\/a>; Special Nutrition Program for Women, Infants,\nand Children (WIC)<\/a>;\nand the National School\nLunch<\/a> and Breakfast Programs<\/a> \u2013 have flexibilities and contingencies\nbuilt-in to allow them to respond to on-the-ground realities in the event of a\ndisaster or emergency situation. USDA\u2019s Food and Nutrition Service administers 15\u202f nutrition assistance programs<\/a>\u202fthat leverage American\u2019s agricultural abundance to ensure children and low-income individuals and families have nutritious food to eat. FNS also co-develops the \u202fDietary Guidelines for Americans<\/a>, which provide science-based nutrition recommendations and serve as the cornerstone of federal nutrition policy. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
