News release from the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Susan Collins\n(R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) along with Representatives Xochitl Torres Small\n(D-NM) and Dusty Johnson (R-SD) introduced the Farming Support to States Act,\nto provide state departments of agriculture with access to immediate, flexible\nfunding to aid in responding to urgent and emerging issues in the food and\nagriculture supply chain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) President and North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring voiced support for the bill, which would provide $1 billion for food and agriculture aid to the states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Farming Support to States Act<\/em> will provide states with the funds they need to foster a more resilient food system,” said Commissioner Goehring. “We thank Senators Baldwin, Collins, and King, and Representatives Torres Small and Johnson, for their collaborative work to provide much needed aid that will meet the unique needs of agriculture and rural communities in America. NASDA Members are uniquely qualified to provide long-term recovery for their agricultural communities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NOTE – California and CDFA are NASDA members) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

State departments of agriculture are using existing\nresources to triage the needs of their producers. States have proven their\nability to effectively respond to the unique needs of food and agriculture\nproducers in their communities. A few examples of how funding\nfrom the Farming Support to States Act <\/em>could be used include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Ensuring our agricultural workforce and our food supply stays safe,\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>
  2. Supporting market development for local and regional food systems,\u00a0<\/li>
  3. Expanding and diversifying food processing and distribution,\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>
  4. Expanding farmer mental health services,\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>
  5. Funding job workshops,\u00a0critical food safety training\u00a0and more.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe Farming Support to States Act<\/em> is an excellent\nexample of the smart policymaking needed to ensure COVID-19 recovery efforts\nreach the nooks and crannies of rural America,\u201d said NASDA CEO Dr. Barb Glenn.\n\u201cNASDA Members are using existing resources to keep our producers afloat. While\nwe don\u2019t yet know every long-term solution needed, state departments of\nagriculture are ready to work for their agricultural producers.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
