A man who stole dozens of beehives across the West has been arrested in Washington state, the Lincoln County Sheriff\u2019s Office (WA) said. The bees could be worth more than $200,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe case has the potential of over 30 victims spread across California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington,\u201d the Sheriff\u2019s Office told the Bellingham Herald.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perry David Bayes, 56, was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property in the first degree, which is a class B felony, according to officials. It was not immediately known if he has a lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation began after the Sheriff\u2019s Office received a report from a beekeeper whose bees were taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe victim went to retrieve his hives and they were gone,\u201d Lincoln County officials said. \u201cThe investigation soon led to some tips and the \u2018sting\u2019 was set up, resulting in the arrest and a \u2018very sweet\u2019 ending.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A \u201cbeekeeper chop shop\u201d is common in California and other parts of the country, the Sheriff\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beehives can mysteriously disappear overnight. In 2017, a man was accused of stealing nearly $1 million worth of hives from almond orchards, The Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBees are big money,\u201d Sgt. Arley Terrence of the Fresno County Sheriff\u2019s Office agriculture crimes unit told the AP in 2017. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of motive to steal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
