{"id":21703,"date":"2020-08-06T08:11:21","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T15:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/?p=21703"},"modified":"2020-08-06T08:12:50","modified_gmt":"2020-08-06T15:12:50","slug":"you-can-put-a-price-on-protecting-rangelands-opinion-piece-co-authored-by-secretary-ross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/index.php\/2020\/08\/06\/you-can-put-a-price-on-protecting-rangelands-opinion-piece-co-authored-by-secretary-ross\/","title":{"rendered":"You can put a price on protecting rangelands &#8211; opinion piece for CalMatters co-authored by Secretary Ross"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Rangeland-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Rangeland-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Rangeland-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Rangeland-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By CDFA secretary Karen Ross and California Rangeland Trust CEO Michael Delbar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As California continues to respond to the challenges of COVID-19, some people are cautiously venturing out into the state\u2019s abundance of open spaces, while hopefully wearing masks, maintaining social distancing and practicing other safe behaviors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From parks to rangeland, our state\u2019s open spaces provide a variety of aesthetic and recreational benefits that it\u2019s next to impossible to put a price tag on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of that open space is also used for grazing, providing the benefit of locally sourced beef to kitchen tables across the state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What many people don\u2019t realize is that open spaces and rangeland also provide an abundance of environmental benefits and, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rangelandtrust.org\/ecosystem-service-study\/\">researchers at UC Berkeley recently discovered<\/a>, you&nbsp;<em>can<\/em>&nbsp;put a price tag on those.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the analysis found that 300,000 acres of rangeland under permanent protection by the California Rangeland Trust provide up to $1.4 billion a year in ecosystem benefits, including contributions to our food, water supplies and climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the state struggles with a $54 billion deficit while trying to continue our leadership in environmental stewardship, it\u2019s important that we get the most bang for every taxpayer buck spent on environmental projects. The UC Berkeley study found that every dollar spent to protect working rangeland returned $3.43 on the investment in ecosystem benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These benefits make a big difference in California. Managed grazing can take carbon out of the atmosphere and put it back into healthy soil, restoring land to its natural state. This concept, implemented through the California Department of Food and Agriculture\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/oefi\/healthysoils\/\">Healthy Soils Program<\/a>, is called carbon sequestration, and it\u2019s a key solution for the mitigation of climate change. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, and its increased concentrations in the atmosphere warm the planet and contribute to climate change, so rangelands are uniquely positioned to aid in a resilient climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government plays a key role in protecting California\u2019s public open spaces and the benefits they provide. But preserving private lands is just as important to our state\u2019s environment \u2013 if not more so. In fact, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sgc.ca.gov\/\">California Strategic Growth Council<\/a>&nbsp;recently invested more than $170 million in the Sustainable Agricultural Land Conservation Program, which will fund easements to help the state meet its climate and environmental goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When rangelands are sold for development, land uses and ownerships are fragmented, putting ecosystems at risk and preventing responsible ranching practices like grazing, which can also reduce invasive plants, remove fire-prone biomass and revitalize vegetation to benefit the entire ecosystem. Livestock grazing can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/commentary\/2019\/11\/rangeland-prortection\/\">lower wildfire risk<\/a>&nbsp;and reduce the impact of fires by slowing down the speed of spreading flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Development is a real threat for a large portion of the state\u2019s private rangelands. California scored among the highest in the nation for threat to agricultural land being developed, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/s30428.pcdn.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/AFT_FUT_StateoftheStates.pdf\">new research<\/a>&nbsp;from the American Farmland Trust. From 2001 to 2016, the study found 465,900 acres of California\u2019s agricultural land was developed or compromised, including nearly 250,000 acres of rangeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, private rangelands are nearly 63% of the state\u2019s undeveloped land and are home to 67% of federally threatened or endangered species. Once this land is lost to development, we can\u2019t get it back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why the role of state and nonprofit land conservation groups, like the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rangelandtrust.org\/\">California Rangeland Trust<\/a>, is so critical to ensuring that development doesn\u2019t come at the expense of our state\u2019s ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California is an agricultural and environmental leader across the nation and around the world.
