Some of these relationships\u00a0have innovative roots, \u00a0and fairs are an example of that.<\/p>\n<p>Each year,\u00a0the California\u00a0State Fair at Cal Expo features a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigfun.org\/come-to-the-fair\/attractions\/the-farm\/\">demonstration farm<\/a>, and it produces a lot of food.\u00a0 So far this year,\u00a0the\u00a0farm has donated nearly five-thousand pounds of produce to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacramentofoodbank.org\/\">Sacramento Food Bank<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cafoodlink.org\/sacramento-emergency-foodlink\/sacramento-emergency-foodlink\">Sacramento Foodlink <\/a>\u2013 high-quality produce like what is seen in the photo to the left. Other fairs have a great tradition of giving with similar efforts. The Big Fresno Fair has raised 268,000 pounds of food over the last three years through its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fresnofair.com\/feed-need-community-food-drive-0\">\u201cFeed the Need\u201d <\/a>program. The Orange County Fair raised more than 43 tons of canned food donated by its customers.\u00a0The Antelope Valley fair collected 10-thousand cans of food last year and is hoping to better that this year. Fairs in Tehama, Stanislaus, Merced, Calaveras, Lake, and Tulare counties are also\u00a0providing food to the needy.<\/p>\n<p>Farms play a major role in food donations, as well.\u00a0 We have declared the month of December to be \u201cFarm to Food Bank Month.\u201d Last year, agriculture provided more than 100 million pounds of food to food banks.<\/p>\n<p>As impressive as all these food donations are, we think we can do better. Improved food access is the first priority of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/agvision\/\">Ag Vision<\/a>, a strategic plan for California agriculture. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/State_Board\/\">The California State Board of Food and Agriculture<\/a> is working to double California farm contributions to food banks over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Food donations are a tremendous resource in a challenging time when one in eight Americans \u2013 nearly 46 million people \u2013 receives emergency food annually.\u00a0More than\u00a0four million of those people are Californians.<\/p>\n<p>I commend California\u2019s agricultural community and\u00a0our fairs for sharing a commitment to help feed the hungry. I look forward to expanding access to healthy California-grown food for all Californians through partnerships with a variety of stakeholders in coming
