Employers in California must take steps to protect outdoor workers from heat illness by providing water, rest, shade and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we shift towards summer, employers need to ensure they have updated their written heat plans and provided effective training to all of their employees who work outdoors,\u201d said Cal\/OSHA Chief Jeff Killip. \u201cFor those who want help, Cal\/OSHA is ready and available to provide consultation and outreach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cal\/OSHA\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dir.ca.gov%2Ftitle8%2F3395.html&amp;data=05%7C01%7Csteve.lyle%40cdfa.ca.gov%7Caa47911daeba4ccc5c1208da3d182056%7Cafdfd251a22248978cbaae68cabfffbc%7C0%7C0%7C637889471071900363%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=2PSfjW8pm0gyT%2BaYDa8x1Gey67SU9Qf2H2h6FBOLo7k%3D&amp;reserved=0\">heat illness prevention standard<\/a>&nbsp;applies to all outdoor worksites. To prevent heat illness, the law requires employers to provide outdoor workers fresh water, access to shade at 80 degrees and whenever requested by a worker, cool-down rest breaks in addition to regular breaks and maintain a written prevention plan with training on the signs of heat illness and what to do in case of an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Plan \u2013 Develop and implement an effective written heat illness prevention plan that includes emergency response procedures.<\/li><li>Training \u2013 Train all employees and supervisors on heat illness prevention.<\/li><li>Water \u2013 Provide drinking water that is fresh, pure, suitably cool and free of charge so that each worker can drink at least 1 quart per hour, and&nbsp;<em>encourage workers to do so.<\/em><\/li><li>Rest \u2013 Encourage workers to take a cool-down rest in the shade for at least five minutes when they feel the need to do so to protect themselves from overheating.&nbsp;<em>Workers should not wait until they feel sick to cool down.<\/em><\/li><li>Shade \u2013 Provide proper shade when temperatures exceed 80 degrees. Workers have the right to request and be provided shade to cool off at any time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cal\/OSHA\u2019s Heat Illness Prevention special eDOmphasis program includes enforcement of the heat regulation as well as multilingual outreach and training programs for California\u2019s employers and workers.
