Through continued strategic planning with CDFA, FDA, CA LGMA, the California Department of Public Health, and many others, we look forward to continued progress in food safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As California partners continue to look ahead and collectively advance food safety, highlights include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>California Agricultural Neighbors Action Report and Subcommittee Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A collaborative effort since 2021 between California farmers, ranchers, shippers, handlers, composters, regulators, academia and more to reduce outbreaks of pathogenic <em>Escherichia coli (E. coli)<\/em> O157:H7 associated with leafy greens in the Salinas Valley resulted in the publication of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdfa.ca.gov%2Fis%2Fdocs%2FCAN_Action_Report_2022.pdf&amp;data=05%7C01%7Csteve.lyle%40cdfa.ca.gov%7C89ad647945244ffa1f1f08dbb4b13fa0%7Cafdfd251a22248978cbaae68cabfffbc%7C0%7C0%7C638302445603395400%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=GAAThkVxBgHOjjn7nYohx2%2BrmrA8G%2BmHuLDcUTU76WQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\">California Agricultural Neighbors: Neighbor-to-neighbor best practices to help enhance localized food safety efforts<\/a> in June 2022. In the past year, work groups have been meeting on each of the report\u2019s action steps, including: <em>Action 1<\/em>. Foster Neighbor-to-Neighbor Interactions and Conversations; <em>Action 2<\/em>. Build a Research Roadmap for the Salinas Valley; <em>Action 3<\/em>. Create a Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) Framework; and<em> Action 4<\/em>. Build and Maintain Capacity to Transfer Knowledge from Research into Applied Practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>California Longitudinal Study<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Underway since 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fda.gov%2Ffood%2Fenvironmental-studies%2Fcalifornia-longitudinal-study-2020-present&amp;data=05%7C01%7Csteve.lyle%40cdfa.ca.gov%7C89ad647945244ffa1f1f08dbb4b13fa0%7Cafdfd251a22248978cbaae68cabfffbc%7C0%7C0%7C638302445603395400%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=aFbzyaI%2B8urztZ2ypSYzbPDH4OQyJenEF34eG89LpLw%3D&amp;reserved=0\">California Longitudinal Study (CALS)<\/a> is focused on addressing outbreaks of <em>E. coli<\/em> O157:H7 along California\u2019s coastal growing region, including the Salinas Valley. It is a partnership between California\u2019s leafy greens, cattle, viticulture and compost producers, the UC Davis Western Center for Food Safety, and state and federal partners, including FDA\u2019s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. CALS is the first study in the Salinas Valley region focused on metagenomics, a genomic sequencing tool that can examine changes in entire microbial communities to identify environmental factors that significantly contribute to the introduction, persistence, growth (or die-off) and spread of foodborne pathogens. The findings from this multi-year study will contribute to a better understanding of the impact various environmental factors, including drought and climate change, can have on food safety, which can be used to refine best practices for growers so they may continually improve the safety of their products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CDFA Technical Assistance Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The CDFA <a href=\"https:\/\/gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdfa.ca.gov%2Fis%2Ftechnicalassistance%2F&amp;data=05%7C01%7Csteve.lyle%40cdfa.ca.gov%7C89ad647945244ffa1f1f08dbb4b13fa0%7Cafdfd251a22248978cbaae68cabfffbc%7C0%7C0%7C638302445603395400%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=70DkzkuJAoc9fi%2F1arSaGjEKcm6a4mKO2PPG1T%2Fb%2BFk%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technical Assistance Program (TAP)<\/a> is continuing to partner with University of California Agricultural and Natural Resources (UCANR) UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Specialists to conduct food safety workshops in various languages and locations throughout California to help all small farmers understand and comply with the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New Era of Smarter Food Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CDFA is working to align efforts with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in its <a href=\"https:\/\/gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fda.gov%2Ffood%2Fnew-era-smarter-food-safety&amp;data=05%7C01%7Csteve.lyle%40cdfa.ca.gov%7C89ad647945244ffa1f1f08dbb4b13fa0%7Cafdfd251a22248978cbaae68cabfffbc%7C0%7C0%7C638302445603395400%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=tiZc%2FB%2F0E6njczvVyR4kYKVCEsPy5AzADNhuz24h7Fk%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Era of Smarter Food Safety <\/a>that leverages technology and other tools and approaches to create a safer and more digital, traceable food system.
