{"id":2722,"date":"2012-11-07T11:22:56","date_gmt":"2012-11-07T18:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/?p=2722"},"modified":"2012-11-07T11:22:56","modified_gmt":"2012-11-07T18:22:56","slug":"annual-fertilizer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/index.php\/2012\/11\/07\/annual-fertilizer\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual fertilizer conference tackles key issues, sets attendance record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The California Department of Food and Agriculture and the Western Plant Health Association (WHPA)\u00a0teamed up last week to present the 20th annual<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/is\/ffldrs\/FREP_Conference_Proceedings.html\"> Fertilizer Research and Education Program (FREP) conference <\/a>in Modesto.\u00a0 Based on attendance alone, it was a great success. More than 260 people attended &#8211;\u00a0a record. Farmers,\u00a0certified crop advisers, regulators and representatives of fertilizer manufacturers were among those in attendance. We would like to thank everybody who came out as well as\u00a0CDFA Secretary Karen Ross for\u00a0speaking to the group about some of the opportunities and challenges ahead, and\u00a0 Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, who commented on the importance of the conference and the value it can bring to producers throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>The conference\u00a0addressed some key issues facing the fertilizer industry &#8211; notably, nitrogen fertilizers.\u00a0Many\u00a0of us working on this issue are aligned in our commitment to find practical ways to reduce nitrates in soil through the use of effective management practices.\u00a0\u00a0FREP is working\u00a0proactively with coalitions, state water boards\u00a0and commodity groups to assist in\u00a0 nutrient management plans to maximize efficiency and is planning to offer\u00a0the following new tools to assist:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A searchable database for 20 years of FREP research with goal of easy access, usability and transfer of knowledge to consultants, growers and certified crop advisors.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A Certified Crop Advisor Training Certification Program to aide technical professionals, such as certified crop advisors, in\u00a0working with growers on\u00a0nutrient management planning activities. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A key component to the success of this conference is the dedicated staff and leadership of the FREP, which was responsible for all aspects of the conference.
