The Golden State\u2019s hardworking farmers produce nearly half of the country\u2019s vegetables and over three-quarters of the country\u2019s fruits and nuts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, the CDFA Produce Safety Program was created in response to the groundbreaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-safety-modernization-act-fsma\/fsma-final-rule-produce-safety\">Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule<\/a>, which established science-based federal minimum standards for the safe growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of fresh produce for human consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Produce Safety Program has grown from four initial inspectors in 2018 to 12 inspectors and specialists today, resulting in the inspection of 3,045 farms or ranches and more than 300 produce commodities to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Produce Safety Program also provides free food safety education, ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/ProduceSafety\/index.php\/2025\/02\/03\/cdfa-produce-safety-program-offers-produce-safety-alliance-psa-grower-training-courses-at-no-cost-for-california-produce-growers-and-handlers\/\">Produce Safety Alliance Grower Trainings<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/ProduceSafety\/index.php\/2025\/07\/01\/cdfa-offers-food-safety-training-for-farm-to-school-network-producers-and-handlers\/\">On-Farm Readiness Reviews<\/a> to help producers with compliance.
