{"id":2938,"date":"2012-12-12T09:55:43","date_gmt":"2012-12-12T16:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/?p=2938"},"modified":"2020-02-25T16:10:02","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T23:10:02","slug":"algae-based-biodiesel-meets-state-fuel-quality-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/index.php\/2012\/12\/12\/algae-based-biodiesel-meets-state-fuel-quality-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"New Algae-Based Biodiesel Meets State Fuel Quality Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Algae.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3003\" title=\"Algae\" src=\"http:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Algae.jpg\" alt=\"A diver wading through algae\" width=\"228\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a>The Department of Food and Agriculture\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/dms\/\">Division of Measurement Standards<\/a> (DMS) has tested samples of a new 20 percent biodiesel blend fuel made from algae and is happy to report that the fuel is compliant with California\u2019s quality specification for biodiesel blends.\u00a0 The new fuel became available November 13, 2012 at four gas stations in Berkeley, Oakland, Redwood City and San Jose as part of a pilot program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">The algae is not typical pond algae \u2013 it is produced specifically to consume sugar and convert it to stored oils that supply energy.\u00a0 The algae is grown in special reaction vessels under very sterile conditions to encourage maximum oil production.<\/p>\n<p>The fuel is 20 percent algae biodiesel blended with low sulfur diesel fuel.\u00a0Samples were tested to ensure overall high-quality engine performance and to ascertain that exhaust emissions will remain low. The tests were also good indicators that engine deposits and engine wear will be minimal, and that corrosion and filter plugging are reduced \u2013 very important factors for fuel used in diesel engines.<\/p>\n<p>When evaluating biodiesel and other fuels, California adheres to standards set by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astm.org\/\">ASTM International <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sae.org\/\">SAE International<\/a>, which meet the requirements of engine manufacturers worldwide.\u00a0\u00a0 DMS has a rigorous program of sampling and testing for fuels sold at retail.\u00a0 A 2012 marketplace survey showed 99 percent quality compliance rate in gasoline and 98 percent compliance for diesel.<\/p>\n<p>Persons experiencing problems with quality, quantity or product labeling of fuels or automotive products can contact their local county department of weights and measures or the DMS at 916-229-3000.
