Through this collaboration, we\u2019re celebrating the resilience, innovation, and deep agricultural traditions that shape California\u2019s farming communities.<\/em><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/pinterest.com\/pin\/create\/button?url=https:\/\/californiagrown.org\/blog\/california-farmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meet first-generation California farmer,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/californiagrown.org\/blog\/meet-ismael-mel-resendiz-of-resendiz-brothers-protea-growers\/\">Mel Resendiz.<\/a> To Mel, being a farmer is more than just a job, it\u2019s the fulfillment of a dream. \u201cBeing a farmer means that I have been able to achieve the American Dream.\u201d said Resendiz \u201cTo own a business, own land, create jobs for family and others in the community, and to wake up every day doing something that I love doing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Starting out in Farming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mel\u2019s career in agriculture started in Mexico where he farmed alongside his three brothers. Then, in 1977, the brothers immigrated to California and continued to work in agriculture. Once in California, Mel took a temporary job at a protea farm. At that farm, Mel fell in love with flowers, eventually starting his own Protea Farm,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/resendizbrothers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Resendiz Brothers Protea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/californiagrown.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/40478368285_54298878a2_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13207\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Passion for Flower Farming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mel\u2019s passion for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/californiagrown.org\/blog\/diy-floral-arrangment%E2%80%8B\/\">flowers<\/a>&nbsp;is evident in the way he speaks about his flowers, and the care he takes in growing them. In 2018, Resendiz Brothers hosted an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americangrownflowers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Grown<\/a>&nbsp;Field to Vase Dinner on their property. Over a hundred guests came to experience the beauty of their flower farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/californiagrown.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/41330152712_96e15f98cb_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13271\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the flower farm spans 100 acres and is home to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/resendizbrothers.com\/flora\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extensive selection<\/a>&nbsp;of Protea, Pincushions, Banksia, Kangaroo Paws, Leucadendron, Filler Flowers and Foliage, as well as plants. Many of the varieties grown on site are hybrids, exclusive to Resendiz Brothers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">California Farmer Advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mel encourages people interested in farming to go for it. \u201cFind something you are passionate about growing and nurturing, and once you have discovered what that is\u2026 don\u2019t let it out of your sight. Keep in mind that farming is not a 40-hour-a-week job, it is a lifestyle. Farming can also be a risky venture, it takes money, time and a lot of patience to get started and survive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConnect with other farmers who are growing similar crops as those relationships can be extremely valuable and fulfilling. I learned about growing proteas from California\u2019s Protea Pioneers, Howard Asper Sr. and Dr. Peter Sacks.
