Cattle rustling may seem like a crime of yesteryear, but it is still a part of the agricultural landscape today. That\u2019s why the California Department of Food and Agriculture\u2019s (CDFA) Bureau of Livestock Identification<\/a>\u00a0keeps careful track of the sale, transport and\u00a0slaughter\u00a0of cattle. The bureau\u2019s inspectors protect\u00a0livestock and help ensure the safety of\u00a0California’s food supply by verifing the legal use of brands, documentation and other forms of identification.\u00a0 On occasion,\u00a0inspectors also assist their colleagues in other states when cattle rustlers hit the road in hopes of selling stolen cattle here.<\/p>\n

On cattle rustling cases,\u00a0inspectors\u00a0may gain important clues\u00a0when a rancher notices something out-of-place \u2013 an unfamiliar brand or a seller whose story doesn\u2019t quite sit right. It often comes down to\u00a0good, old-fashioned leg work and cooperation with colleagues in other agencies to identify the bad guys and track them down.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how it went with a recent rustling case, which began on October 23, 2012, when a CDFA special investigator received a telephone call from a special agent with the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture looking into the theft of 14\u00a0calves.<\/p>\n

CDFA\u2019s brand inspectors\u00a0found that six calves were sold at a sales yard in Kern County and eight were sold at a similar facility in San Bernardino County. Based on brand inspection documents, inspectors were able to establish a match with the livestock that had been stolen several states away.<\/p>\n

The bureau\u2019s investigator then contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Office with the details on the suspects. Shortly thereafter, Los Angeles deputies arrested three suspects, who were charged with animal cruelty and vehicle theft and now\u00a0face extradition to\u00a0Oklahoma to\u00a0answer to\u00a0other charges, including cattle theft.<\/p>\n
