The average age of a farmer is 58 years old, relatively few heirs are willing to take over\u00a0farms, and fewer\u00a0people are interested in becoming farmers because of a variety of challenges. This dynamic is made more troublesome by the fact that food demand is expected to double worldwide by the year 2050. As a result, the opportunity and need for California farmers will be significant, and the cultivation of new farmers and ranchers is more important than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Because\u00a0of this, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/state_board\/\">California State Board of Food and Agriculture<\/a>, which first embraced this subject in a meeting\u00a0 in 2011,\u00a0 devoted\u00a0 its June 4<sup>th<\/sup>, 2013\u00a0meeting to continue\u00a0the\u00a0discussion of\u00a0programs that assist\u00a0 new farmers and ranchers. Presentations were heard from the <a href=\"http:\/\/landbasedlearning.org\/\">Center for Land-Based Learning<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/landbasedlearning.org\/farm-academy.php\">California Farm Academy<\/a>,\u00a0founded by board president <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/State_Board\/Ag_Board_President_Bio.html\">Craig McNamara<\/a>; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albafarmers.org\/\">Agriculture and Land Based Training Association (ALBA); <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.caffafoundation.com\/index.htm\">California FFA<\/a>; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calvet.ca.gov\/\">California Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a>; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.farmvetco.org\/\">Farmer Veteran Coalition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the beginning farmers who participated in the ALBA program spoke of the difficulties he faced as a new farmer, primarily in the distances he must travel in order to sell his products. This was met by a suggestion from board member <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/State_Board\/BrdBios\/bioRodneyTaylor.html\">Rodney Taylor <\/a>that the farmer contact his local school district\u00a0in order to acquire a more local customer, a path the farmer said he had never thought to explore. \u00a0Farm to school programs are a growing opportunity for small farmers to develop a volume-consistent customer.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the meeting was clearly established \u2013 identifying ways the board could assist the development of the next generation of farmers and ranchers. Whether they come from programs such as ALBA, are veterans returning from combat, or high school students who are excited about a life in farming,\u00a0the board is committed to creating a place for each of them in California agriculture\u00a0 and doing all it can to facilitate their success.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Farm demographics\u00a0continue to change in California.
