One of CDFA\u2019s Information Technology programmers, Jarrett Heather, is enjoying a richly deserved moment in the spotlight for his work on a side project, animation for a video by performer Weird Al Yankovic. The video, for a parody song called Word Crimes, is viewable below, as is a recent feature story about Jarrett in the Sacramento Bee. In a nod to the agency that we appreciate, the video segment includes a \u201cCare-O-Meter\u201d that was certified by CDFA\u2019s Division of Measurement Standards, which is responsible for regulating all weights and measures in California.<\/p>\n

The video reflects CDFA\u2019s philosophy that employees be encouraged to express creativity and explore their talents to find their true calling on the job. We see this as essential for our staff to foster relationships, identify additional aptitudes, and promote the learning process throughout their careers. As it relates to Jarrett, he has created a number highly valued animation projects for CDFA that helped prepare him for this moment.<\/p>\n

We enthusiastically congratulate Jarrett for his achievement. We hope many more of our employees enjoy similar opportunities in their areas of interest and expertise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jarrett Heather has been a fan of \u201cWeird Al\u201d Yankovic since he was 7 years old.<\/p>\n

Now 37, Heather joins the rest of the country in enjoying Yankovic\u2019s newly released parody video, \u201cWord Crimes,\u201d but the Elk Grove resident is doing so as a blossoming celebrity.<\/p>\n

Heather, a software developer at the California Department of Food and Agriculture, produced the visuals for \u201cWord Crimes.\u201d The music video, a send-up of singer-songwriter Robin Thicke\u2019s hit single \u201cBlurred Lines,\u201d is composed entirely of typographic animation. The technique employs moving text that is often cleverly fitted with closely associated images, logos and symbols to express an idea \u2013 Heather\u2019s expertise.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in November of last year, I got an email out of the blue from Al Yankovic offering a directing gig,\u201d Heather said. \u201cHe had seen a project I had done in 2010 called \u2018Shop Vac\u2019 that was animated in a similar style and he thought I was the best person to add visuals to \u2018Word Crimes.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Yankovic\u2019s success, music critics agree, rests in the visual appeal of his music videos. Some of his most popular works include \u201cWhite and Nerdy,\u201d a parody of Chamillionaire\u2019s \u201cRidin\u2019,\u201d and \u201cSmells Like Nirvana,\u201d which was inspired by Nirvana\u2019s \u201cSmells Like Teen Spirit.\u201d \u201cWord Crimes\u201d was released Tuesday, the second day of Yankovic\u2019s daily video release for his latest eight-song album, \u201cMandatory Fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWord Crimes,\u201d which as of Saturday evening had received nearly 8 million views on YouTube, is part educational and part joking. It features some of the most common \u201cword crimes\u201d in the English language, such as the interchanging of \u201cfewer\u201d and \u201cless\u201d and the careless use of \u201cit\u2019s\u201d instead of \u201cits\u201d (no apostrophe).<\/p>\n

I have no formal training. But my entire life I\u2019ve been interested in how things work, whether it\u2019s how music is made, how cartoons are drawn, or how gadgets are put together,\u201d Heather said.<\/p>\n

With a background in computer programming and interface design, Heather taught himself how to use the animation software Adobe Aftereffects. His first animation,\u201cShop Vac,\u201d was a learning experiment. But it was good enough for Yankovic.<\/p>\n

Though a fun project, \u201cWord Crimes\u201d was a challenge, Heather said.<\/p>\n

With a tight deadline, he got to work as soon as he received the lyrics in early January, dedicating about 500 hours to the project. He drew many of the second-by-second animations by hand, before scanning and manipulating them on a computer. On average, it required two hours of work to create one second of video. All his sketches and doodles for \u201cWord Crimes\u201d now sit in a thick binder in his home studio.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stopped everything else in my life. Every night and every weekend, I was working on \u2018Word Crimes,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Heather would send a test clip to Yankovic via email, and the parody writer would send his reactions back right away. Their online correspondence went on almost daily for the first few weeks. Finally, the two met in person.<\/p>\n

Rather than conducting business, Heather saw their meeting as an opportunity to be the Yankovic fan that he was, harkening back to his childhood days in rural Delaware. \u201cHe was very gracious about being \u2018geeked out\u2019 over,\u201d he said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Are they friends?<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say yes, and I could only hope that the feelings are mutual. He\u2019s been very encouraging, knowing how the spotlight was going to affect me\u201d as a naturally shy person, Heather said.<\/p>\n

With a full-time job, a family and \u201canimation being so time-intensive,\u201d he said he has been extremely selective in choosing from the steady stream of freelance opportunities that have come his way. Following the release of \u201cWord Crimes\u201d on Tuesday to a receptive audience, Heather is reconsidering.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow I need to reach a point in my life where I take all these skills and put them to work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But he remains hesitant about making a full-time career out of animation. \u201cIt\u2019s like making a top score in a video game. If I wanted to make my mark in musical comedy, where else can I go beyond Al? He is the entire genre.\u201d<\/p>\n
