But you consume far more through the food you eat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Water We Eat | Craftsmanship, Spring 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/craftsmanship.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/water-usage-by-item.jpg?resize=1024%2C551\" width=\"473\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some consumer items use a lot of water (jeans are among the most demanding), but the bulk of our water goes into food.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Water We Eat | Craftsmanship, Spring 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/craftsmanship.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/California-exports-1024x499.jpg?resize=1024%2C499\" width=\"473\" height=\"328\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the return of intense drought in California, attention has focused on the \u201cvirtual water\u201d that the state exports \u2014 just in the food it grows for others.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Water We Eat | Craftsmanship, Spring 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/craftsmanship.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/US-water-trade.jpg?resize=1024%2C499\" width=\"473\" height=\"328\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Overall, however, considering all the people who live in California, the state ends up being a net importer of the water it eats. The big exporter is the American midwest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Water We Eat | Craftsmanship, Spring 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/craftsmanship.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/global-water-trade.jpg?resize=1024%2C383\" width=\"473\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The US as a whole then exports our water so the rest of the world can eat it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/d\/d6\/MeanMonthlyP.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Water We Eat | Craftsmanship Magazine, Spring 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/d\/d6\/MeanMonthlyP.gif?resize=1200%2C744\" width=\"673\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a>A lot of that \u201cvirtual water\u201d goes to places without water shortages, such as the dark blue areas on this seasonal map of rain and snow patterns.<\/p>\n<p>So why don\u2019t we just grow food where the water is plentiful, and stop growing it where it\u2019s dry? Take those villainous almonds, for example, which consume a gallon of water per nut. Analysts at Rabobank estimate that 80 percent of the world\u2019s almonds\u2013and 99 percent of those in the U.S.\u2013are grown in California, where crippling droughts are becoming the norm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Water We Eat | Craftsmanship, Spring 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/craftsmanship.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/food-and-water-footprint.jpg?resize=1174%2C632\" width=\"473\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, almonds only grow well in dry climates, and they have flourished in California thanks to the state\u2019s sophisticated (and heavily subsidized) system of irrigation. More important, the water almonds consume is nothing compared to the gallons you\u2019re eating in many other foods.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Water We Eat | Craftsmanship, Spring 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/craftsmanship.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/crop-replacements.jpg?resize=1556%2C636\" width=\"473\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In some dry areas of the world, farmers are turning to less thirsty crops.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Water We Eat | Craftsmanship, Spring 2015\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/craftsmanship.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/slide-no-10-image.jpg?resize=1558%2C669\" width=\"473\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are lots of nutritious alternatives to the thirstiest foods.
