While drought tolerant landscaping is a practical and very reasonable option for our area, please be aware that not all drought tolerant plants are “nice” plants to use and have in your yard. Chose very carefully what you plant or that replacement for your lawn may be a horrendous mistake for the environment. Shop only from reputable merchants and do your homework first! The people at UC Davis have a drought tolerant selection of plants to physically look at in the Arboretum and a list of them on line (http://arboretum.ucdavis.edu/gardening.aspx). Another good reference to help you pick an environmental winner is PlantRight (http://www.plantright.org). For general information on invasive species, go to http://www.whatisthisplant.org for more resources. You never know: that remodel you did to save the water may also be the environment you save as well, IF YOU PREPARE AND DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE FIRST!.
